Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus 2026: Price, Limits & Choice

Compare the $20 monthly subscriptions, Claude annual billing, account limits and a repeatable task evaluation. Includes worked budgets and a repeatable evaluation log.

Last reviewed:

Answer first: the reviewed monthly price is the same

Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are each $20 monthly in the reviewed official web sources. The monthly price difference is $0 before tax. Claude Pro also has $200 annual billing; Plus has no annual billing option. These statements concern those two plans, not every Claude or ChatGPT tier.

At these prices, one year of Claude monthly payments is $240 and annual prepayment is $200, a $40 difference. Twelve Plus payments also total $240. If you only need eight months, eight $20 payments cost $160; an annual commitment does not automatically save money for shorter use.

Choose a representative task, not a universal winner

Before testing, define a result that can be checked: a patch that passes relevant tests, an answer whose citations support its claims, or a revision that preserves every required fact. Give both tools the same non-sensitive input and the same acceptance criteria. Pick tasks from your actual work.

A useful evaluation sheet contains task, input version, selected model, tool settings, accepted or rejected result, corrections, elapsed time, review time, limit encountered and incremental charge. Keep the raw output and your review notes so a colleague could repeat the comparison. This page supplies a method; it does not claim that AI Price Spy ran a benchmark.

Worked budget: one subscription or both

Illustrative budget: using one $20 subscription for 20 accepted tasks allocates $1 per accepted task. Keeping both $20 subscriptions for the same total of 20 accepted tasks allocates $2 per accepted task. Subscription providers do not bill this way; it is a way to compare your own fixed budget.

Add an assumed $12 separate API bill and the two-subscription example becomes $52, or $2.60 per accepted task. The $12 and task count are example inputs. A second subscription is useful only if it produces a measurable additional outcome or solves a demonstrated bottleneck.

Compare the exhausted allowance and active credential

Read each account usage screen before a large task. Record which limit stopped work and the displayed reset time; do not compare screenshots from different accounts as a guaranteed message allowance. The model, context and tools used can change the workload.

Keep application subscription usage and requests sent with an independently billed API or gateway credential separate. Claude Pro is not the eligible Max API-credit benefit. For Codex or Claude Code, follow the linked usage and setup guides and inspect the credential that is actually active.

Make the renewal decision from your own record

After a normal week, total accepted results, review minutes, limits encountered and additional spending. Continue a longer trial only if the week is unrepresentative. Keep the product that handles your repeated work at a tolerable total cost, and retain a second only for a specific, recorded benefit.

Before renewing, check the current checkout, account tools and cancellation conditions. Official prices and model availability can change after this review. Do not present the scenario calculations as evidence that either tool is faster, more accurate or cheaper for everyone.
